Dear Sir,    When you got up that morning did you realize you would be a blessing? Do you enjoy your job? Do you see it more than hamburgers, dirty tables, condiments, money changing hands? That day when you served the family seated in the corner booth, did you sense the pain and sadness in the midst of casual talk? When the mother handed you her phone, asking you to take a picture, the daughters rolled their eyes and joked about pictures in a fast food place; yet they were thankful to move in closer and smile. They knew this moment was special. Did you?

TogetherReeling and stunned by the diagnosis, breathless by tears, the daze of planes and long drives converged as we physically experienced Christ redeeming the curse. He has given us Today to hug more than an accumulation of twenty years. We are reunited as sisters; again “we” when we say “me”.

The strength of that sister, daughter, wife holding us together; strong in the midst of a battle. She is anointed by the priest as he speaks James 5:14 and we think of the verses preceding ~”The Lord is compassionate and merciful” (11b) and we trust and rest in that comforting assurance.

We are grateful. Grateful that while cancer is of the curse, we are no longer bound in the curse. Redeemed, we have been given Today to love and share, to hug and smile, to encourage and serve. We move about the kitchen, shop for cozy clothes, buy a bakery cake for our father turning 75. IMG_0788 (1)Christ blankets us in softness and warmth as we talk of prairies and chickens and newly designed furniture on the farm; shadows of the “joy and beauty we will share together as we experience the glory of God.” (Romans 5:2b) Each moment is a gift.

As we received the burger, fries, shakes, and sundae; comfort food we barely tasted, Sir, did you know your part in comforting our hearts when you captured those moments of hope being birthed by suffering?

“More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit Who has been given to us.” (Romans 5:3-5)
